The People's Park
By Eileen Black
Today the name Queen's Island is synonymous with shipbuilding. Far less well known is its early history as Belfast's first pleasure park, an episode referred to in passing by numerous writers but never explored in detail. This booklet seeks to remedy time's neglect, by providing accounts of the island's evolution as a park and the erection, in 1851, of the Crystal Palace as conservatory, focal point for fetes, displays and other events.
